Denise Martin

Denise Martin | 2011 Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class, U.S. Navy

Denise joined the Navy in Nov 1999. I attended basic training in Great Lakes, Ill., before going to Photographer’s Mate ‘A’ School at DINFOS where I graduated at the top of my class in July 2000. My first duty station was with Fleet Imaging Facility Pacific in Lemoore, Calif.  I am qualified to fly in the back seat of the Super hornets along with flying with Search and Rescue in helios.

I then took orders to VFA-2 Super hornets (squadron) where I was the first female in an all male command. I ran night check photographers. We took care of ATFLIR and TFLIR pods.  Along with working on the SHARP pods.

During my time stationed there, I deployed to Iraq with SEAL TEAM THREE from February to October of 2006, as a combat camera person.  I was the only female/photographer that they ever had go with them on missions outside the wire. During my time with VFA-2 I deployed onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) in support of the Indonesian tsunami relief. When the Navy did a rate merger my job title changed from a photographers Mate to a Mass Communication Specialist.

In May 2007, I transferred to DMA DET American Forces Network Sigonella in Sicily, attending Intermediate Photojournalism Course in route. During my three year tour

I become a Broadcast Journalist, then transferred in the radio department and became the afternoon DJ.  I also anchor the nightly news along with helping run the monthly live Feedback show.  The last year in a half of my tour I became the station Leading Petty Officer.

During the summer of 2008 I deployed to Tbilisi, Georgia (Russia) as part of AFN’s TMRTVS Team. In August 2009, I successfully completed the Intermediate Electronic Journalism Course at DINFOS.

I was chosen as AFN South and AFN Europe’s Senior Military Member of the Year as well as DMA Anacostia’s Sailor of the Year for 2009.

During my off time I enjoy spending time with my family, being outside, running, hiking, cycling, diving, camping, gardening, photography…pretty much anything that helps me enjoy the awesome weather.   I believe life is too short and you need to do the things

that make you happy.

I am a Navy brat.  My dad was a Radioman for 22-years.  I was born in Puerto Rico and spent my childhood moving around wherever my dad was stationed.  When he retired we moved to Gainesville, Fl so I guess I have to say I’m from Gainesville, FL.
